Bill Gates pulls out of India's AI summit amid Epstein files controversy

BBC News

Bill Gates pulls out of India's AI summit amid Epstein files controversy Bill Gates will not deliver his keynote address at the India AI Impact Summit in Delhi, his philanthropic organisation said hours before the Microsoft co-founder was due to speak. The Gates Foundation said the decision was made after careful consideration and to ensure the focus remains on the [summit's] key priorities, but did not elaborate. Gates's withdrawal comes amid a controversy over his ties to the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein after he was named in new files released by the US Department of Justice in January. Gates's spokesperson has called the claims in the files absolutely absurd and completely false, and the billionaire has said he regretted spending time with Epstein . Gates has not been accused of wrongdoing by any of Epstein's victims and the appearance of his name in the files does not imply criminal activity of any kind.

Masayoshi Son pitches 1 trillion U.S. AI hub to TSMC and Trump team

The Japan Times

SoftBank Group founder Masayoshi Son is seeking to team up with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. to realize what could be his biggest bet yet -- a trillion-dollar industrial complex in Arizona to build robots and artificial intelligence. Son envisions a version of the vast manufacturing hub of China's Shenzhen that would bring back high-tech manufacturing to the U.S., according to people familiar with the billionaire's thinking. The park may comprise production lines for AI-powered industrial robots, they said, asking not to be named as the plan remains private. SoftBank officials are keen to have the Taiwanese maker of Nvidia's advanced AI chips play a prominent role in the project, although it's not clear what part Son sees for TSMC, which already plans to invest 165 billion in the U.S. and has started mass production at its first Arizona factory. Nor is it clear that TSMC would be interested.

The PC industry is losing the argument for local AI

PCWorld

It's not enough to champion AI hardware that supports local large language models, generative AI, and the like. Hardware vendors need to step up and serve as a middleman -- if not an outright developer -- for those local AI apps, too. At MWC 2024 (formerly known as Mobile World Congress, aka one of the world's largest mobile trade shows), the company this week announced a Qualcomm AI Hub, a repository of more than 75 AI models specifically optimized for Qualcomm and Snapdragon platforms. Qualcomm also showed off a seven-billion-parameter local LLM, running on a (presumably Snapdragon-powered) PC, that can accept audio inputs. Finally, Qualcomm demonstrated an additional seven-billion-parameter LLM running on Snapdragon phones.

Decentralized Technologies for AI Hubs

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

AI requires heavy amounts of storage and compute with assets that are commonly stored in AI Hubs. AI Hubs have contributed significantly to the democratization of AI. However, existing implementations are associated with certain benefits and limitations that stem from the underlying infrastructure and governance systems with which they are built. These limitations include high costs, lack of monetization and reward, lack of control and difficulty of reproducibility. In the current work, we explore the potential of decentralized technologies - such as Web3 wallets, peer-to-peer marketplaces, storage and compute, and DAOs - to address some of these issues. We suggest that these infrastructural components can be used in combination in the design and construction of decentralized AI Hubs.

Switzerland vies to become Europe's AI hub - CityAM

#artificialintelligence

With approximately 8.6 million people and four official languages (German, French, Italian, and Romansh), Switzerland is uniquely at the heart of Europe but without being a member of the European Union. In global terms, Switzerland does not even enter the top five as an'AI leader'. But when it comes to Europe and its place in the AI race, Switzerland has a claim to be Europe's number one European AI hub (when excluding the UK). From the AI for Good Global Summit in Geneva to the Novartis AI Innovation Lab in Basel, Switzerland has been slowly becoming an epicenter of artificial intelligence in Europe. Founded in 1853, the École Polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) is a research institute and university specializing in natural sciences and engineering.

DoD's AI Hub Seeks Industry Input on Business Process Automation - ExecutiveBiz

Artificial intelligence expert moves to Montreal because it's an AI hub

#artificialintelligence

Irina Rish, now a renowned expert in the field of artificial intelligence, first became drawn to the topic as a teenager in the former Soviet republic of Uzbekistan. At 14, she was fascinated by the notion that machines might have their own thought processes. "I was interested in math in school and I was looking at how you improve problem solving and how you come up with algorithms," Rish said in a phone interview Friday afternoon. "I didn't know the word yet (algorithm) but that's essentially what it was. How do you solve tough problems?"

Deloitte wins $106 million contract with the Pentagon's AI hub

#artificialintelligence

The Defense Information Systems Agency awarded a $106 million contract to Deloitte Consulting to build the Pentagon's artificial intelligence hub's AI development platform, the U.S. Department of Defense announced Aug. 12. The company will "design and build" the Joint Artificial Intelligence Center's Joint Common Foundation, a capability that DoD AI leadership has stated will be integral in developing, testing and fielding AI capabilities. The contract has a one-year base period worth $31 million with three option years through August 2024. Work is scheduled to start Aug. 17, according to Lt. Cmdr. "The Joint Common Foundation will provide an AI development environment to test, validate and field AI capabilities at scale across the Department of Defense," Abrahamson said. "The impact of the JCF will come from enterprise‐wide access to AI tools and data for AI developers across the Department and its partners that will help synchronize AI projects, reduce development redundancy and enable the broad deployment of AI-enabled solutions to the tactical edge where front line operators can benefit from these capabilities."
